Guidance for Playing Familiar vs Unfamiliar Songs at Your Wedding

Do you have an eclectic or esoteric taste in music? Maybe you enjoy a genre not commonly played on the radio? If this is true for you, you may be facing a problem when creating your wedding playlist. Don't stress! Let's go over some ideas on how to handle this situation.

Talk to Your DJ

If you are hiring a DJ, then you can pass the buck on, so to speak. An experienced wedding DJ should know how to build your playlist, so you don't have to. They should ask you what songs you have to have and what songs go on the DO NOT PLAY list (Macarena, anyone?) Another benefit to having a DJ is they can read the room and adjust the music to better suit the overall vibe.

Don't be afraid to bring up concerns about alienating or offending guests with them. They will be MCing your event and need to have an idea of what the crowd will be like.

Do You Feel Like Dancing?

If your music taste is not conducive to being on the dance floor, maybe sprinkle it in during the cocktail hour. People should be mingling and chatting, so the music will not be the center of attention like it would be during the reception.

If your music is easy to dance to, you might consider assigning it to a specific moment (first dance, grand entrance/exit, etc). You could also have songs spread out between more common ones, just to keep the dancefloor full.

Slow Burn

Real talk: a lot of the people you would be worried about bothering with your music will be gone within the hour of dinner being served. These are the older set, people with kids, or people who aren't into staying out late. This means you can start out the reception with crowd-pleasers, then slowly increase the number of your favorite songs the later the night goes.

Ultimately, You Do You

It's your wedding, remember? Don't let yourself get caught up in what your guests will think. I for one, am a huge proponent of doing things your way especially since it's more than likely you who's paying for everything. So relax, fill that playlist with tech-metal, house music, and 1950s hits.
