If the majority of your guests aren't dancers, you might be wasting your money hiring a DJ. Consider these alternative activities for your wedding reception.
#1 Minglo (Mingling Bingo)
I'll admit, I stole this one from Offbeat Bride (which is a stellar site for those wanting to buck traditions at their wedding). This requires a moderate amount of time and creativity. For more detailed information, check out this post on Offbeat Bride.
# 2 Board/Card Games
This could be done per table, or with an area off to the side for guests to play where it's a bit quieter. Games that are short, and easy to learn are ideal. Although a little more on the adult side, Cads About Matrimony would be a great on-theme card game.
#3 Karaoke
Maybe the majority of your guests would rather sing than dance? Karaoke might be the way to go.
#4 Video Games
This doesn't have to be the center of attention, you could have an area off to the side with Mario Kart or Smash Bros. ready to go. You could also have a game like Rock Band replace some of the music for the evening, giving your guests a reason to cheer and sing along.
#5 Lawn Games
Lawn games are probably one of the most acceptable dancing alternatives to a wedding reception. You could have croquet, horseshoes, or giant jenga.
#6 Laser Tag
For something a little more intense, why not laser tag? This will of course depend on your venue's setup and location. You also might want to let your guests know ahead of time so they can bring different clothes or be prepared to get dirty in their fancy ones.
#7 Costume Contest
This could be great for a Halloween wedding, or if you have a lot of cosplayers on your guest list! At the night's end, let everyone vote and have a small award for the best dressed.
#8 Trivia
Have tables compete against each other in a trivia contest. Categories could be related to the couple's favorite books and shows, information about them, or anything between.
